The West Branch Wetland May 8, 2010, 2:00 – 5:00

West Branch Wetland

See video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgugB9un3qw

Naturalist Lenny lampel will give us a preview look at the newest nature preserve in the Mecklenburg County Parks system. The 23-acre wetland, one of the largest and most diverse in the region, sits at the confluence of the West Branch and the Rocky River east of Davidson in the 90-acre preserve.

While it will be several years until trails and a nature center are developed at the site, we will hike the route of a soon-to-be-constructed greenway for impressive views, singing frogs, and signs of beaver activity.

Naturalists-led 1.5 hour walks through the constructed trails of this area’s richest woodland wildflower habitat.

The 20-acre preserve is located near Mountain Island Lake in northwestern Mecklenburg County.

The first 1/8 mile of the one mile loop is boardwalk, suitable for those with walking difficulty.
