SUMMARY:NC Arbor Day Tree Planting
DESCRIPTION:Replenishing Davidson’s urban tree canopy is one of DLCs most vital missions.  Our goal is to plant 200 trees each year through community events  during tree planting season (October 1st-March 30th). \nAs part of our 25th anniversary\, we are celebrating NC Arbor Day with a special tree planting event at Fisher.  We are hosting this event with the Town at the Archery Range. The Range is  a special and unique recreational asset located off the entrance road to the park.  We will plant more than 50 trees providing much needed shade and adding to Davidson’s urban canopy. \nThe event will include an archery demonstration by Sterling Martin\, the driving force for creation of the Range which was made possible by support from Mecklenburg County..  The Town will have archery equipment available for those interested in testing their skills at the range. \nThe trees\, shovels\, gloves\, and other equipment will be on hand for volunteer planters\, and all ages are welcome as long as children are accompanied by an adult.  These events are great fun and “plant” wonderful memories for volunteers willing to get their hands dirty and learn about the value of trees and how to plant and care for them. \nVolunteers should bring a reusable water bottle\, wear close-toed shoes\, and dress for getting dirty.  Sign-up is required HERE and by signing-up you are agreeing to our waiver which can be found HERE. \nAll ages are welcome but children must have parental supervision.  We have gloves but if you have some\, you may want to bring yours’ as ours’ are well-loved.  Please also bring a reusable water bottle and wear close-toed shoes.  Sign-up is required here and by signing-up you are agreeing to our waiver which can be found below.

SUMMARY:Wilderness Calling September: Monarch Fall Migration Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join DLC for our September WILDERNESS CALLING offering.\n\nCome learn about Monarch butterfly fall migration by hiking through our very own Fisher Farm Park dedicated wildflower meadow and our very own Fisher Farm Park and Abersham Park dedicated milkweed fields.  Monarch butterflies have the longest insect migration in the world!  Each fall they fly in successive generations over 2000 miles along the east coast of the United States to Mexico to hibernate in the evergreen forests high in the mountains of central Mexico.  To complete this wonder of nature\, Monarch mothers lay eggs only on milkweed because the baby larvae are such picky eaters.\n\nCome to Fisher Farm Park to see the newly protected milkweed field and learn about the DLC-led Wildlife Enhancement Project’s protection of milkweed for Monarchs.  This event involves a short hike in Fisher Farm Park to learn information about the Monarch life cycle and migration. For more avid hikers\, there will be an extension hike to see the milkweed areas in Abersham Park.  You can choose the exertion level that fits you by choosing the shorter walk and information or adding the longer walk to see more!  Recommended for adults\, teens and families with older children able to walk one mile or three miles.\n\nRegistration is required.  Please go to: SIGN-UP.  By signing up you are agreeing to our participant waiver.  To read our waiver please go to: WAIVER.

SUMMARY:Beaty Park Invasive Removal
DESCRIPTION:This is an additional work day at Beaty Park to try and cut back the invasive species. \nBeaty Park is Davidson’s newest park and it’s a gorgeous space\, but it needs a little love.  A number of invasive species are thriving under the tree canopy and choking out the biodiversity that makes an ecosystem healthy.  Members of the Friends of Beaty Park are holding two invasive species removal events to drive back the most problematic plants by pruning these scrubs and treating their stumps. If you would like to help\, sign-up today. It promises to be a rewarding day in a beautiful place.  If you plan to attend\, sign-up here: SIGN-UP GENIUS.  Email carly@davidsonlands.org with any questions.

SUMMARY:Spring Wildflower Ephemerals Walk at Fisher Farm Park

SUMMARY:Fisher Farm Milkweed Flagging - Calling All Butterfly Lovers!
DESCRIPTION:Davidson Lands Conservancy Outreach Activity\nMarking Milkweed in Fisher and Abersham Parks: A Family and Child-friendly outdoor activity!\nSaturday\, May 15: 10:00 -11:00 am\nLocation: Lower parking lot in Abersham Park at the Pavilion \nActivity Overview: Help mark wild milkweed in Fisher Farm and Abersham Park to protect the endangered Monarch butterfly! Monarchs need milkweed so they can lay their eggs and complete their life cycle. The Monarch eggs hatch into caterpillars (we may see some!) and the Monarch caterpillars eat the milkweed leaves. The caterpillars can only eat milkweed leaves: that makes the milkweed the host plant for Monarchs. We want to protect the milkweed from being mowed\, so the Monarchs can live. You will get to make a flag to mark a field of milkweed in the park! We will be using the tables in the pavilion to make flags to mark milkweed and then we will walk to a patch of milkweed and install the flags! Yay! All sanitized supplies are provided\, masks are required and social distancing will be observed at all times. \nSIGN UP HERE! Only space for 6 families.
