DESCRIPTION:Beaty Park is Davidson’s newest park and we continue to work to strengthen and improve this amazing natural space.  As fall comes and the weather gets cooler\, we are hosting a service day at Beaty Park.  We want to do an invasive plant species removal\, debris clean-up and help the Davidson Garden Club as they create educational spaces within the park.  This will be a fun day and a great way to make a lasting impact on this space. SUMMARY:Wilderness Calling September:  Monarch Fall Migration Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join DLC for our September WILDERNESS CALLING offering.\n\nCome learn about Monarch butterfly fall migration by hiking through our very own Fisher Farm Park dedicated wildflower meadow and our very own Fisher Farm Park and Abersham Park dedicated milkweed fields.  Monarch butterflies have the longest insect migration in the world!  Each fall they fly in successive generations over 2000 miles along the east coast of the United States to Mexico to hibernate in the evergreen forests high in the mountains of central Mexico.  To complete this wonder of nature\, Monarch mothers lay eggs only on milkweed because the baby larvae are such picky eaters.\n\nCome to Fisher Farm Park to see the newly protected milkweed field and learn about the DLC-led Wildlife Enhancement Project’s protection of milkweed for Monarchs.  This event involves a short hike in Fisher Farm Park to learn information about the Monarch life cycle and migration. For more avid hikers\, there will be an extension hike to see the milkweed areas in Abersham Park.  You can choose the exertion level that fits you by choosing the shorter walk and information or adding the longer walk to see more!  Recommended for adults\, teens and families with older children able to walk one mile or three miles.\n\nRegistration is required.  Please go to: SIGN-UP.  By signing up you are agreeing to our participant waiver.  To read our waiver please go to: WAIVER.

DESCRIPTION:DLC has conserved and stewards many beautiful properties in our area to protect water quality\, forests\, and wildlife. The Chester Farm is one of DLC’s standout conservation projects because of its large size\, stunning beauty\, and ecological value\, in addition to the story of the unique and profoundly generous donation by the late Frank Chester. \nOur final Wilderness Calling event of 2024 will feature a hike and brief history of Chester Farm with Dave Cable and Janet Andersen\, two people critical to the conservation of Chester Farm. Please join us for this special event on a very special preserve. You are encouraged to sign-up early. \nWe will be walking off-trail through the forest where there is a thick blanket of leaves and uneven\, potentially slippery ground so please wear proper footwear and bring a walking stick if you need extra stability.  Participants must be 10 years old or older. \nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:Wilderness Calling January:  Greet the New Year Hike
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our first program of 2025\, a peaceful hike to welcome the new year\,  breathe in fresh air\, set intention\, and connect with the land as we walk the beautiful trails behind the Runneymede neighborhood. We’ll start with some conversation about focusing on and connecting to our natural surroundings as we walk — on this hike we won’t identify trees\, plants or birds\, we’ll simply notice the beauty around us. We’ll walk in silence for about an hour\, stopping along the way to take in each scene with some guiding words from our leader. This walk will allow us to be open to new things\, and perhaps we’ll each see something in nature we haven’t seen before. For those who would like to stay for an additional 30 minutes\, we’ll offer some time for reflection and guided mindfulness at the end. \n\n\n Registration is required HERE. By signing up you are agreeing to our participant waiver. She is also a strategic planning\, marketing\, and communications consultant for nonprofits\, local governments\, and small businesses. DESCRIPTION:Every night\, the sky tells us a story that is written in the stars.  The stories feature royal princesses\, mythical heroes\, and legendary beasts — written by ancient Greeks and Romans and illustrated by the constellations in the night sky.  We can see this story every night as the Sun sets and the stars become visible.  Join us as we explore some of the famous stories the sky has to offer\, imagine our own constellations\, create them with marshmallows\, and write our own stories about how they came to be in the sky. \nThis outing is for children ages 6+ with their families and will be held in one of the science labs at the college\, Dana 127\, so there is no need to dress for the weather. \nRead our waiver HERE. DESCRIPTION:Our February Wilderness Calling event is all about LOVE…The first part is a hike and highlighting all the things to love about Beaty Park and then an optional work day to help show Beaty Park our appreciation. We will kick-off this event with a hike that is good for all levels. Our guides will talk about the history of the park and then lead us through the property\, highlighting our native tree project\, wildlife habitats\, pollinator garden\, native plant beds and the pond restoration that is underway. This hike is approximately 1.5 miles and on wide packed paths. \nAfter we complete the hike\, all who are able are invited to stay for a Beaty Park work day.  If you love something\, then you care for it and we really love Beaty. We will join the Friends of Beaty Park and work on trails\, debris and invasive species removal\, and education activities among other things.  If you are only able to come for the hike\, that is fine.  If you have already explored Beaty and only want to come for the work day\, that is great too. \nRead our waiver HERE. DESCRIPTION:This Friday from 9-11:30 am DLC is hosting a volunteer work day at Fisher Farm Park.  The Wildlife Enhancement Collaborative is hosting a controlled burn in the Fisher Farm forest in March to strengthen the canopy.  In preparation for this\, there are a few projects that need to be tackled at the park including moving some cut cedars away from the burn zone to create wildlife habitat near the pollinator meadows.  We have a group of students from CSD joining us but if any members of the greater community can come help\, please sign-up HERE.

SUMMARY:Summer's Walk Tree Planting
DESCRIPTION:Replenishing Davidson’s urban tree canopy is one of DLCs most vital missions.  Our goal is to plant 200 trees each year which we accomplish through a variety of community tree plantings that we hold during our region’s planting season (October 1st-March 30th). \nDLC is kicking off our 25th anniversary year with a planting at Summer’s Walk.  Summer’s Walk HOA has been a conservation partner\, working to replace trees lost in the development of their community.  On Saturday\, March 1st we will meet at Carly’s Common.  We will plant  over 30 trees in different areas around the community that we have worked with the HOA to identify.   DLC will auger the holes for easy digging and provide the trees\, mulch\, tools and trained Tree Masters to ensure the trees are planted properly.  All we need are volunteers looking to have fun and leave a lasting impact in the form of a tree.  There’s nothing better than watching a tree grow and knowing that you helped plant it. \nAll ages are welcome but children must have parental supervision.  We have gloves but if you have some\, you may want to bring yours’ as ours’ are well-loved.  Please also bring a reusable water bottle and wear close-toed shoes.  Sign-up is required HERE and by signing-up you are agreeing to our waiver which can be found HERE.

This outing is appropriate for adults and children 8+. \nPaula Gross\, M.S.\, is an educator and botanist whose passion is connecting plants and people through formal and informal education – from adults and college students to preschoolers. She is the co-author of the Southeast Native Plant Primer and Bizarre Botanicals and the former Associate Director of the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens. SUMMARY:NC Arbor Day Tree Planting

SUMMARY:Wilderness Calling April:  Archer Hike and Search for Orchids
DESCRIPTION:One of DLCs treasured conservation easements is on a 27-acre piece of land located in Mooresville and owned by Cindy and Frankie Archer.  The property is mostly woodland consisting of mixed aged trees and includes a small intermittent stream flanking the eastern side of the land.  Besides the wonderful wildlife habitat and ecosystem provided by this natural area\, the land supports a significant population of pink lady slippers (Cypripedium acaule)\, an uncommon orchid native to this area. The pink lady slippers generally bloom once a year in the spring. \nFor our April Wilderness Calling event\, we are going to try to catch the orchids in bloom and explore portions of the Archers property.  There is no guarantee around the timing but the great news is that even if we miss the bloom\, the rest of the property is stunning on its own.  This program will include a talk by the Archers about the land and all of the work they have done to the property and then an easy hike around the edge of the property to spot some of these incredible flowers.  This event is guaranteed to fill-up quickly so reserve your space today. \nPlease bring a reusable water bottle and wear close-toed shoes.  Sign-up is required HERE and by signing-up you are agreeing to our waiver which can be found in the description.

DESCRIPTION:DLC is partnering with The Cain Center on an exciting installation.  This thoughtful exhibit challenging viewers to consider the environment features the work of innovative artists Joel Hunnicutt and Julie Anne Greenberg\, the recipients of the Exhibition Award from ArtFields 2024 Competition. This exhibit focuses on Joel’s craftsmanship with wood\, and Julie’s creativity surrounding the elements of weather. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting outdoor adventure with Town of Davidson Arborist Andrew Sileo! Ever wonder what it takes to care for towering trees? Andrew will introduce you to his fascinating arsenal of tools—some you’ve probably never seen before! Can you guess what they’re for? You might even get a chance to use his throwball\, and if the weather allows\, get ready for a high-flying surprise—Andrew will demonstrate his drone in action! \nBeaty Park is home to a variety of trees\, each with its own story. Many are marked with identification labels\, and these will be the key to a fun activity. Get ready to see trees in a whole new way! \nThis outing is for children with their families. The minimum age is 5 years old. Wear shoes or boots that you don’t mind getting muddy as we will be on and off trails.  Please\, no dogs or strollers. \nRead our waiver HERE.
