SUMMARY:NC Arbor Day Tree Planting
DESCRIPTION:Replenishing Davidson’s urban tree canopy is one of DLCs most vital missions.  Our goal is to plant 200 trees each year through community events  during tree planting season (October 1st-March 30th). \nAs part of our 25th anniversary\, we are celebrating NC Arbor Day with a special tree planting event at Fisher.  We are hosting this event with the Town at the Archery Range. The Range is  a special and unique recreational asset located off the entrance road to the park.  We will plant more than 50 trees providing much needed shade and adding to Davidson’s urban canopy. \nThe event will include an archery demonstration by Sterling Martin\, the driving force for creation of the Range which was made possible by support from Mecklenburg County..  The Town will have archery equipment available for those interested in testing their skills at the range. \nThe trees\, shovels\, gloves\, and other equipment will be on hand for volunteer planters\, and all ages are welcome as long as children are accompanied by an adult.  These events are great fun and “plant” wonderful memories for volunteers willing to get their hands dirty and learn about the value of trees and how to plant and care for them. \nVolunteers should bring a reusable water bottle\, wear close-toed shoes\, and dress for getting dirty.  Sign-up is required HERE and by signing-up you are agreeing to our waiver which can be found HERE. \nAll ages are welcome but children must have parental supervision.  We have gloves but if you have some\, you may want to bring yours’ as ours’ are well-loved.  Please also bring a reusable water bottle and wear close-toed shoes.  Sign-up is required here and by signing-up you are agreeing to our waiver which can be found below.

SUMMARY:Wilderness Calling April: Archer Hike and Search for Orchids
DESCRIPTION:One of DLCs treasured conservation easements is on a 27-acre piece of land located in Mooresville and owned by Cindy and Frankie Archer.  The property is mostly woodland consisting of mixed aged trees and includes a small intermittent stream flanking the eastern side of the land.  Besides the wonderful wildlife habitat and ecosystem provided by this natural area\, the land supports a significant population of pink lady slippers (Cypripedium acaule)\, an uncommon orchid native to this area. The pink lady slippers generally bloom once a year in the spring. \nFor our April Wilderness Calling event\, we are going to try to catch the orchids in bloom and explore portions of the Archers property.  There is no guarantee around the timing but the great news is that even if we miss the bloom\, the rest of the property is stunning on its own.  This program will include a talk by the Archers about the land and all of the work they have done to the property and then an easy hike around the edge of the property to spot some of these incredible flowers.  This event is guaranteed to fill-up quickly so reserve your space today. \nPlease bring a reusable water bottle and wear close-toed shoes.  Sign-up is required HERE and by signing-up you are agreeing to our waiver which can be found in the description.

SUMMARY:Conservation Camp Returns
DESCRIPTION:One of our most popular new programs last year was a week of summer camp offered through the Town of Davidson Parks and Recreation called CONSERVATION CAMP and we’re back again this year.  Over the course of five days we introduce our campers to each of DLCs pillars:  Land\, trees\, trails & greenways\, and wildlife habitats and then on the fifth day we wrap it up with a super-fun field day.  We explore various parks and natural spaces around Davidson as we tromp down streams looking for salamanders and crawfish; hunt for Treasure Trees and learn all about what makes them special; and so much more.   Every day has a guest speaker\, adventure\, craft and small service project…plus some time to just explore the outdoors.  Each of our sessions sold out last year so if this is something your child would enjoy\, make sure you sign-up as soon as the camp schedule goes live. \nWe are offering it from June 23-27 and then again July 21-25 from 9-noon each day. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact carly@davidsonlands.org

SUMMARY:DLC Stewards: Westbranch Stream Clean-Up
DESCRIPTION:Please join the amazing Gordon Clark to discover the beauty of the South Prong of the Rocky River that runs behind the Westbranch community and help us clean it up as we enjoy its peaceful grace. We will walk the stream bed and collect trash.  Last year we followed a beautiful heron that led us down the stream. \nThere will be fallen logs that you will need to climb over so a moderate level of mobility is required. Water levels can get between 24-36 inches at times so please dress appropriately including proper footwear. The best shoes to wear for this type of activity are closed-toe water shoes (meaning shoes in the style of a running shoe).  If you don’t have water shoes like this\, please wear old sneakers that can get wet.  If you wear things like Chacos and Tevas\, please keep in mind they trap sand and debris under your foot.  Things like rain boots are also inadequate as they fill with water. If you have questions\, please contact carly@davidsonlands.org.  This event is guaranteed to fill-up quickly so reserve your space today.  To sign-up click here.  By registering you are agreeing to our waiver which is found in the event description.  Please also bring your own water.

SUMMARY:Wilderness Calling: Hurricane Helene a Year Later
DESCRIPTION:As we approach the year anniversary of Hurricane Helene Wilderness Calling is hosting a talk led by Dr. Brad Johnson and a group of his research students who spent last fall tracking the impact of this hurricane on the Blue Ridge. \nDr. Johnson\, a Davidson College environmental studies professor who studies rivers and landslides\, knew he had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to connect his work to what was happening just a few hours away. \nHurricane Helene was a generational storm that impacted nearly the entire Blue Ridge in North Carolina. More than 15 counties received over a foot of rain with the most-impacted regions receiving more than 25 inches of rain. The result was intense flooding across the Blue Ridge and thousands of landslides. Scientific response has been slow for a handful of reasons including difficulty responding to damaged locations\, damage to the most local universities\, and the breadth of the storm. As a result\, Davidson students have been on the first wave of data collected. In this talk\, students will present their results of the first year of data collecting including work collected as part of a class in the spring of 2025 and more focused field research in the summer of 2025. It is likely that this work is the broadest field dataset collected thus far on Helene. \nNow\, a year later\, they reflect on their work and the lessons from it. \nSign-up is required here and by signing-up you are agreeing to our waiver which can be found below.

SUMMARY:20th Anniversary RUN FOR GREEN
DESCRIPTION:This is a huge year for Run for Green\, DLC’s only fundraiser.  It’s the 20th running of the race and there are a lot of changes. To celebrate our big anniversary\, a large roundabout is being installed in the middle of the course at the intersection of Robert Walker and Davidson-Concord Road. This is great for traffic flow\, but tough for runners\, so we are suspending the half marathon this year.  We encourage anyone planning to run the half\, to please run the 10K. We have also added a one-mile fun run/walk this year.  Early season prices are at their lowest so sign-up now and be part of this historic event and support conservation in our community. \nhttps://runsignup.com/Race/NC/Davidson/RunForGreen

SUMMARY:Wilderness Calling: Night Sounds & Owl Prowl
DESCRIPTION:Join Davidson Lands Conservancy for our November Wilderness Calling offering:  Night Sounds & Owl Prowl at Fisher Farm Park.  When the sun sets and the world gets dark\, you have to rely on your hearing to experience the world around you.  Naturalist Rob Van Epps will discuss owls and other things that we hear in the forest at night. This exciting celebration of owls (and great excuse to enjoy Fisher Farm Park after dark) includes an overview of owls & other nocturnal creatures\, a short hike listening for these amazing creatures and s’mores (as long as the fire risk allows for an open flame). \nThis event is open to all ages\, but we will be walking in the dark with limited light. \nRob Van Epps is an avid birder\, naturalist and wildlife photographer who lives in Davidson.  He served on the Board of Directors for the Davidson Lands Conservancy for many years\, including two years as the President.  He continues to lead walks for the DLC and other groups looking for birds\, butterflies\, salamanders and any other critters out there. \nCheck out his photos on iNaturalist at https://www.inaturalist.org/people/19858 \nPlease bring a reusable water bottle and wear close-toed shoes.  Sign-up is required here and by signing-up you are agreeing to our waiver which can be found in the sign-up description.

SUMMARY:DATE CHANGE: Wilderness Calling January: First Hike at Chester
DESCRIPTION:Because of the rainy forecast and slick forest floor we have to reschedule our Chester Hike to Sunday\, January 11th.  We are offering two time slots\, 1:30 and 3:30.  If you are interest go sign-up via the link below and register today! \nPlease join us for our first program of 2026\, a peaceful hike to welcome the new year\, breathe in fresh air\, set intention\, and connect with the land as we walk the beautiful Chester property\, one of DLC’s incredible conserved properties that isn’t usually open to the public. \nWe’ll start with some conversation about focusing on and connecting to our natural surroundings as we walk — on this hike we won’t identify trees\, plants or birds\, we’ll simply notice the beauty around us. We’ll walk in silence for part of the time with integrated stops along the way to take in each scene with some guiding words from our guide. This walk will allow us to be open to new things\, and perhaps we’ll each see something in nature we haven’t seen before. \nRead our waiver below. By registering for this outing\, you are agreeing to its terms and conditions.  If you are unable to attend\, please update your sign-up.  If the sign-up is full\, please email carly@davidsonlands.org to place your name on our waitlist.  We are usually able to accommodate everyone. \nShort bio: Kathleen McIntyre is a somatic and nature-based clinical social worker who supports individuals and groups in accessing the wisdom of the body and the natural world to foster healing and growth. She is the author of The Nature Reset\, an international retreat leader\, and a TEDx speaker who invites individuals to rediscover a felt sense of belonging to themselves and to the natural world. www.katmcintyre.com \nSign-up is required which you can do here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0845AEAB28A7F8C70-61399195-wilderness Please read our waiver listed at the bottom of the sign-up description.  By signing-up for this event\, you are agreeing to its terms.
