OUR FOURTH PILLAR OF CONSERVATION

PROTECT WILDLIFE HABITAT

A community in balance means healthy ecosystems and diverse and thriving wildlife. As our community is developed and more urban, our wildlife and habitats are stressed, fragmented and driven to more rural areas. In Davidson we are blessed with many special, not well known corridors rich in wildlife worthy of protection and enhancement.

THE WHAT

Scattered throughout the community, wildlife habitats are typically wooded and positioned along small streams. Our DLC program, which works in partnership with Davidson College, uses a scientific approach to identify, map, and keep track of key wildlife habitats in DavidsonPermanent conservation isn’t practical because too many different people own the properties, so we concentrate on educating and engaging residents and landowners about the value of these corridors. We also show them the best land management practices to support wildlife. DLC’s Wildlife Habitat program includes two important initiatives:

1. The Wildlife Enhancement Collaborative, focused on habitat enhancement and restoration at Fisher Farm and Abersham Park.

2. The Wildlife Corridor Program, focused on educating residents about wildlife rich corridors and ways to enhance them.

THE WHY

Some landowners don’t realize the importance of these habitats and may not have experience in the best land practices to protect them. Similarly, the public often isn’t aware of area wildlife habitats and how valuable and vulnerable they are.
