OUR SECOND PILLAR OF CONSERVATION
WILDLIFE HABITAT & TREE CANOPY
We enhance wildlife habitat and tree canopy throughout the greater Davidson area. Our main initiatives include our Wildlife Enhancement Collaborative, planting hundreds of trees a year, and recognizing our mature canopy with our Treasure Tree Program
THE WHAT
WILDLIFE HABITAT
The Wildlife Enhancement Collaborative (WEC), formed in mid-2022 to enhance the wildlife features of Fisher Farm and Abersham Parks, includes experts from Davidson College, the Town of Davidson, Mecklenburg County, and the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. Williams is our official Wildlife Habitat Sponsor.
Our current work includes enhancing former agricultural fields, removing invasive plants from the forest understory, and re-introducing prescribed fire.
TREE CANOPY
DLC’s tree planting program engages and educates community members of all ages. We partner with the community to share our efforts in ensuring the health, diversity, and protection of our urban forests. By working closely with the Town of Davidson, Davidson College, and local neighborhoods, we educate residents on tree care while striving to plant 200 trees annually to expand our community’s canopy.
THE WHY
As land development thins our local tree canopy and disrupts wildlife habitats, DLC is stepping in to reverse the trend. By partnering with the Town of Davidson, Davidson College, and local neighborhoods, we work to protect our urban forests and restore the natural corridors that wildlife depend on.
