Chalkbark Maple

NAME:
COMMON – Chalkbark Maple
BOTANICAL – Acer saccharum subsp. leucoderme
FAMILY – Aceraceae (also listed as Sapindaceae)

DERIVATION:
Native to the eastern deciduous forest (Piedmont to Florida and west to Texas)

GROWTH CHARACTERISTICS:
The growth rate is from 12” to 18” a year with a mature height of 25 to 30’ and mature width of 25 to 30’. Foliage is very similar to Sugar Maple.

GROWTH LOCATION:
A “generalist”, it is the most common deciduous tree of eastern and central North America. It can tolerate dry soil and understory sites.

ATTRIBUTES, VALUE, UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS:
The seeds of the maple are called samaras and are eaten by squirrels and other small mammals, the wood can be used. It does provide an intense fall color, usually yellow.
