DERIVATION:
It is native to a broad area in the eastern, southeastern and south-central United States. In North Carolina, it can be found in all areas of the state.
GROWTH CHARACTERISTICS:
The willow oak has a balanced, rounded, form and fine texture. It may grow from 70 to 100 feet with a rounded crown. Fast growing.
LOCATION:
Found on wooded slopes, old fields, floodplains, and bordering swamps and streams. It is absent from the mountains, from Florida, and the southeast of Georgia
ATTRIBUTES, VALUE, UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS:
The willow oak is a popular landscape tree, quick growing, producing acorns in 15-20 years. The acorns are a valuable food source for birds and mammals. The willow oak has a good resistance to many diseases.
