TREES OF
LAKE DAVIDSON NP
Winged Elm
(Ulmus alata)
NAME:
COMMON – Winged Elm
BOTANICAL – Ulmus alata
FAMILY – Ulmaceae
DERIVATION:
Native to eastern and central North America.
GROWTH CHARACTERISTICS:
Medium-sized tree about typically 50′ in height and width. Gets its name from the corky bark that can be described as wings on young bark.
LOCATION:
Prefers rich moist soil but is flexible, and will tolerate wet feet. Salt and pH tolerant.
ATTRIBUTES, VALUE, UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS:
Nice yellow fall color in foliage. Graceful shape similar to the American Elm, but more graceful. Unfortunately, it is particularly susceptible to Dutch Elm disease (a fatal fungal disease spread by beetles with no effective cure). Powdery mildew, phloem necrosis, cankers, and leaf spots can also be a problem, especially on stressed trees.
