Thanks to our loyal runners and generous sponsors, Davidson Lands Conservancy’s 15th annual Run for Green was a virtual, resounding success! And we do mean virtual.
Run for Green, DLC’s primary fundraiser, supports our community’s four pillars of conservation: to conserve and steward land; to protect the urban tree canopy; to expand greenways and trails; and to protect key wildlife corridors.
Faced with COVID-19, a conventional race (last year boasting over 850 runners!) was not feasible this year.
DLC looked to race director Whitney Dainko of Queen City Timing and board member and race coordinator, Paul Freestone, to plan and execute a virtual race that would be safe, engaging, and fun. Using the Race Joy app, over 150 registered runners were able to learn more about remarkable trees along the route, get cheered on during hills, and listen to an uplifting playlist put together by WDAV as they completed the 5k, 10k, or half marathon. Several participants signed up for our two- and three-race challenges.
While we missed the energy and community spirit of the annual in-person event, this virtual race was a creative and exciting way to host this year’s Run for Green.
