A few years ago, DLC was approached by the Shearwater Point neighborhood in Cornelius to discuss options to preserve and cultivate the wildlife around this beautiful lake community. This group of neighbors proceeded to create a plan for pollinator gardens in key community spaces. They then proceeded to consult various Davidson citizen experts in this area, along with Dearness Gardens from Huntersville and HARP which is a habitat assessment firm.

Together they laid out a plan that helped control the shoreline with pollinator plants, established a pollinator garden and planted some native tree seeds. This was all achieved with the financial and volunteer efforts of the neighbors. The plantings include; Mountain Mint, Milkweed, Bee Balm, Primroses, Daisies, Heucheras, Goldenrod, Yarrow, Asters and some original plants were kept as well.

With these projects and through education sessions neighbors were encouraged to create their own pollinator gardens and to also care for and support preserving their tree canopy. It is a small but important step toward preserving nature and helping it thrive. It is a garden that will not only be beautiful, but will attract essential wildlife (such as butterflies, bees and birds) that will in turn help our plants reproduce.

You can help create a wildlife corridor in the region by planting native pollinator plants as well to help with migration and (re)colonization.
